LEAGUE MATCH

03rd October 2004 - Archery Fields, Ulsan

Won Shot Wanderers FC  (4 - 1) DMZ FC

The Won Shot Wanderers faced DMZ FC at home here in Ulsan under the watchful eyes of the new supporters club The So Hots.  A win and a good show was necessary, as ever the Won Shots did not fail and welcomed the home crowd with open arms and a 4-1 defeat of the travelers.

The first half saw a goal from Alan Thornton within five minutes.  The ever present Owen Pearson assisted with a timely threaded ball through to Alan, whose pace saw him into the oppositions box unchallenged with just the keeper to beat. 1-0 to the Won Shot Wanderers.

The next fifteen minutes saw DMZ FC take a lot of pressure from both the left side of the Won Shots midfield and the centre Midfield.  A number of shots went just wide in this period and the Won Shots kept the pressure on.  A second goal was inevitable and that again was provided by Alan Thornton.  A nice bit of skill and some good old speed saw Allen through and a scorching shot from the 18 yard box saw the Won Shots go to 2-0.

The last fifteen minutes of the period DMZ FC pressured from their midfield but the stoic John Buckley and Paul Campbell in the centre were unbeatable DMZ FC never really looked threatening.  There were in fact two shots on target for DMZ both from a long way out and very fast and hard to gather balls for our keeper Jason.  Jason also had to deliver a couple of crucial one on one tackles against the DMZ forwards to prevent DMZ FC from scoring.

DMZ FC were buoyed when they received a free kick a few feet away from the 18 yard box.  This ball was lofted high and if Jason McCatrney hadn’t been so awake DMZ would have scored.  Another beautiful save from Jason.

It went in 2-0 to the Won Shots at half time, due to the individual effort of Jason McCartney.

The second half saw Shea McCarthy score a wonderful goal that would not look out of place in the Premiership.  Within three minutes of the start Shea broke down the left side and passed two defenders.  From 23 Yards out he slammed home a scorcher which went into the top right of the oppositions goal.  This goal was to be voted the best goal of the game.  It is also a contender for the Won Shots goal of the season.

DMZ FC hung their heads at this goal and this sort of start to the second half and tried to rally their troops with shouts that Shea’s goal was a lucky shot.  Either way it was a goal.  3-0 to the Won Shot Wanderers.

The game then became a midfield game with both teams picking up the ball in midfield and loosing the ball in the midfield.  The Won Shot Wanderers appeared off the pace and DMZ FC seemed to have picked up a little spirit.  Jason McCartney was still invincible in his goal and again kept the ball out with a number of one on one saves once again.

With 30 minutes to go DMZ FC were awarded a penalty for which neither team had a clue as to the reason.  DMZ FC stepped up to take the kick and fortunately for the Won Shot Wanderers the ball hit the left upright – there is a god after all.

Both teams and the referee became a little sloppy in the last half hour of the second period which meant that the game slowed and there were a number of miss timed tackles.  DMZ FC made the most of the Won Shot Wanderers sloppy play and managed to scrape together a scrappy goal to make it 3-1.

Five minutes later Trey Watson with a fine individual effort brushed off his marker and chipped the DMZ FC Keeper who was off his line.  It was a well thought out goal from Trey.  4-1 to the Won Shots.

The game ended at 4-1 and it was not the most fluid displays by the Won Shot Wanderers.  It was a win by the Won Shots but they need to play their games less erratically in order to be in for a chance of winning this league.

Thank you to DMZ FC for traveling and giving us a competitive game, they played as though they were going to win the game at any minute.  Thanks to Sen for referring the game and also for traveling.
