LEAGUE MATCH

05th SEPTEMBER 2004

Real Busan (5 - 1) Won Shot Wanderers FC

This Match Report was provided by Real Busan

We played the Won Shot Wanderers from Ulsan, our old opponents from last year who always gave us a tight game, who have now reformed and have put together a really competitive team, including some familiar faces from last time, including the very skilful Shea who gave us no end of trouble and we ended up putting clumsy fouls on him in the second half. Shea, just so you know ~ that string of fouls was more clumsy than anything else, we never meant to keep hacking you down, "it just happened". Sorree~~!(editors note: - SO-RREE in Korean means "Bull-shit"

First half, then, and Real are playing pretty good football. Everyone put in some good shit and played solid, focused, concentrated half. After our crap summer, where we finished 3rd in the league after stuttering through the season struggling to put out teams of even 11 guys, struggling in to integrate try-out guys, struggling not to give away 2 goal leads every game and struggling to get results, suddenly we found ourselves clicking all over the field.

The defence was not mean in the traditional sense but played with energy as a unit and kept the Won Shots well away from our goal, and I don't remember one shot from them in the first half. Kyle and Tim are now a famous pair for us in the middle, they both grow in stature every game and they are always getting in the strikers' way, which is where they should be. On the flanks, Richard and John defend but then push up and pass it pretty smartly, which is what full-backs should do. Between the 4 of us, it feels like we are more of a defensive unit than ever ~ back in Real's golden age a year ago we had better defenders in the middle but who ran the show all by themselves. Now, our d all needs each other, relies on each other, and we are becoming "one"~~!

The midfield and attack clicked today, all thanks to the 50% of Mike Lamb which linked it all up so nicely for us this afternoon. He seemed to be involved somewhere in most of our chances on goal, now we got a (converted) striker to take it from the midfielders and push it on, do a one-two, take a shot from far out or close range, be an option ~ very good presence. When Marcelo took a ball and ghosted past a guy to the by-line and put a cross in halfway through the half, Mike was there to meet it and smash it in. Jolly good stuff. Mike Lamb ~ you are the link man.

1-0 at half time but we created a lot of very good chances in the first half, apart from the goal there was some good football to appreciate, a fair number of shots, three close efforts on goal from Marcelo and Seb, and one disallowed goal where Sen overruled the linesman ~ not sure why he did that. But now we got linesmen, and Sen, at least in the second half, is starting to notice and use them, plus the field is not so short ~ looks like this season's games won't keep getting stopped for offside calls every second attack.

Second half, more goals as guys from both teams get more ragged. The Won Shots come back into it and put a shot just wide of the post. Shea and their wingers start to click and cause trouble in and around around our box, winning free-kicks and embarassing our defenders. But we score next, Seb putting it in from close range from a Gino cross for 2-0. Two minutes later the Won Shots pull it back to 2-1. There are 25 minutes to go, and they feel the equalizer coming, while Real are on the rocks. The ball bounces kindly in the box for one of their midfielders who hooks it resolutely into the far right corner of the goal and goes away celebrating his goal but in the split second meantime, Pete pulls off a miracle diving save to his left to keep us in it. Surely this was the turning point. They thought they'd equalized, they'd thrown everything at us but still trailed. Right afterwards, Marcelo took a pass at the byline, cut back and drilled it in via a deflection for 3-1, that was an entertaining 5 minutes but the game was surely ours now.

The Won Shots, for all the other teams in the league, play hard and will be competitive. Don't be deceived by the flattering scoreline and go underestimating them, they play hard and they'll give us all a game this season and pick up points for sure. With 15 minutes to go we escaped the equalizer which would have galvanized them and made them favourites to win, and even after that they pressed us properly.

But in the last 10, we finished the game off with two more goals, plus two great crowd-pleasing moments of skill and fight. First, Seb is trapped against the touchline with two guys on him. He looks poised to move but is frozen still for an age, with each guy hesitant to commit. Then one guy moves and Seb hooks it over his leg and hops over, then as the ball comes down he volleys it over the next guy and he's away. Amazing skill. Soon after, the Won Shots are pressing and Pedro hounds one of them before putting in this storming, noisy tackle that was all ball. Both times you wanted to stand there and clap.

And the two more goals. A long shot is splilled by the goalie and Pedro steams in and does his gypsy thief routine and puts in the rebound for 4-1. It was deja-vu, I've seen this thing at least three times now. Still, always good to see Pedro score.

Then a cross from the left comes in and bounces off someone like Kenny, who we'll agree to credit with the goal "of the game". Not a moment of sublime skill but still, only a moment before, he got on the end of a move that saw Pete throw it to John, who fed Marcelo quickly to his feet, who then ran up, put Ken through, who put in a fine shot to the top right corner only for the goalie to pull off a fine save. What I'm saying is, he earned that slice of luck.

And the score is now 5-1, and that's how it stayed. Sen organized us all at the end and had us shake hands. Not a bad idea, as last season everyone seemed to be getting shitty towards everyone. This league ~ lets be nicer to each other ~ !
