LEAGUE MATCH
10th July 2005 - Guseo Dong, Busan
PSV Busan (1 - 0) Won Shot Wanderers FC
Another overcast Sunday and we entered the game with higher hopes than the previous week facing a team yet to play a game in the new campaign. We also started the game remembering that PSV had (like all the other teams in this league) improved ten-fold during the course of last season.
As we strode into the jungle, er, I mean onto the pitch, it seemed we had quite a strong starting eleven with the welcome return of Andy between the sticks and Ricardo the prodigal son spearheading the attack.
The first half was a pretty even affair with an early chance falling to Dan Read who couldn't manage to find the target and Quins tireless efforts leading to numerous half chances. We were looking fairly solid in defence with Sheeno in ever inspirational form (gets a bit boring actually!!). The pube-haired Canadian had such a spring in his step that I wondered if he had moved on from regular to phone. Sex, that is. (Sorry big man, last time, I promise!!) With Lewis having another outstanding game at the back things are looking good for the 'shots back four. It's just a shame the boy can't drink as well as he plays!!
We reached half time even with neither side particularly bossing the game and PSV on the shitty end of a couple of penalty decisions (Duke, is that ref a burly fan or what?!). We entered the second half feeling confident and perhaps our sense of security was our downfall as we found ourselves 1-0 down after only 10 minutes. After some Wonshots pressure, a long ball from PSV's impressive keeper caught our defence slightly flat to let their striker in for a very tidy finish.
After this we seemed to struggle for ideas with PSV pushing on even more and giving us a couple more scares, two of which were dealt with brilliantly by Andy in goal who had another stormer of a game. We only seemed to improve with the introduction of Gareth who pressured the PSV defence well (Ok, I'll get my tongue out of the boss's arsehole!). Along with Coman, who pushed up if only to stop pushing their players in our box, Gareth and Quin gave the PSV defence a tough last ten minutes but unfortunately it wasn't enough.
Overall it was both a dissapointing result and performance for the blues but PSV proved (as if we needed reminding) that both the quality and competitiveness of this league have gone into orbit this season. Thank god we still know how to party even if we have forgotten how to win. A nice 1 o'clock ride home in a taxi made it all seem worthwile.
However the dozen red roses I had to buy to apologize to my girlfriend for coming home late and drunk only served to remind me that we can't afford any more slip ups this season. Hopefully we can be on the right end of a 1-0 result next time!!
OUR MAN OF THE MATCH - Andy Marley(GK) - A second appearance between the sticks proved more impressive than last time. A hand to an excellently placed ball wasn't enough to keep it out, then two excellently timed and cat like saves to keep us in the game. Wonderful stuff.
OPPOSITIONS MAN OF THE MATCH: - Andy Marley(GK) - The opposition were obviously really frustrated by this mans efforts.
OUR MAN OF THE MATCH FOR THE OPPOSITION: - Michael Wennermo - Well done and keep up the hard work
