LEAGUE MATCH

19th June 2005 - Yangsan Stadium

Won Shot Wanderers FC (3 - 3) DMZ FC

Our first league game in a lifetime was entered into with understandably low expectations as the Wonshots began the game with only eight actual Wonshots! A Pre-match comment of this being 'a whole new low' seemed pretty accurate as we kicked off with two of the oppositions players and a couple of new faces (and bellys) in the line up.

A great first 10 minutes saw the boys in blue move the ball around so well that it almost made me forget about my longing desire for a poo. Unfortunately, a few lapses in concentration mixed with a couple of hangovers saw us 3 goals down at half time. This despite an amazing effort from Shea at kick off which cleared the keeper and hit the crossbar harder than a John Cattigan kiss on the neck of a drunk North American!

Missing a few regulars we banded together in the opening period of the second half and managed to pull one back through a penalty won and converted by Igor. Seen as a dubious decision by many (or was it just the heckler on the side line?!), the penalty seemed to spur us on and we soon found ourselves back in contention as Igor once again found the back of the net. This time a Daniel Read corner was met perfectly by the big Belarussian who found himself in space to convert the chance.

As we continued to push for an equaliser we seemed to move the ball better than in the first ten  minutes and with Shea and Dan Read terrorising the DMZ full-backs like a Cattigan Kiss on a.....well, you get the picture, we were looking good! In the final ten minutes a great ball in by Igor found the ever reliable (Ahem...) Anderton in the middle to convert with a diving header that wouldn't have looked out of place in a world cup final (Who wrote this eloquently penned epic?!).

We continued to push in the final minutes and were hoping for a reversal of the result we had suffered earlier in the season at the hands of DMZ. Unfortunately we failed to find the back of the net despite another crossbar bound effort from Shea as well as a few other goalmouth scrambles.

Overall this was probably a fair result but more importantly it was one of the most enjoyable games we had played for some time. Thanks to the boys at DMZ for such a good game as well as the new boys who turned up. Andy, Matt, Kevin and Adam all had stirling debuts and are a welcome addition to our thinning squad.

If this was an indicator of things to come then bring on next season. Good work fellas!!
